In the last decade or so, the idea of the connected car has grown rapidly from a concept to reality. Vehicle owners nowadays often enjoy an impressive amount of access even when they’re nowhere near their cars. GMC owners are no different, as myGMC has shown. Read on to see what exactly myGMC is, what it does, and how it can benefit you.
What Is myGMC?
If you drive a GMC, you may be able to take advantage of myGMC. It’s a mobile app designed by General Motors (GM) to provide GMC owners with greater convenience and connectivity as well as to keep them informed about the diagnostics of their vehicle. GM created the app based on feedback from its customers. With it, you can exercise control over your GMC from both inside and outside of the vehicle.
The app is available for both Android and iOS. To install it, search for “myGMC” in your phone’s mobile app store. It should appear as the top result. Tap the “Install” icon to initiate installation. Heed any on-screen instructions or dialog boxes that arise. Once installed, the app allows you to associate up to 10 vehicles to a single myGMC account.
What Does the myGMC App Do?
The myGMC mobile app contains numerous features that GMC owners may find useful. One of its most prominent features is remote access. Using the app, you can start or stop your GMC SUV or truck, control its door locks, flash its lights, or honk its horn. This allows not only for a high level of convenience but also for a degree of security. In certain circumstances, for example, you can set off or shut down various components of your vehicle to prevent loss or call attention to a potential hazard.
Another excellent feature is the ability to view your vehicle’s status remotely. From the app, you can evaluate values such as fuel efficiency, tire pressure, the odometer reading, and the motor oil. If you own an electric or diesel vehicle, you can also check the status of your battery charge or the level of your diesel exhaust fluid. Knowing and understanding this data can help you make decisions concerning vehicle maintenance. The app may tell you, for instance, that your motor oil needs changing, allowing you to take action on a matter that could damage your engine if left unchecked.
That’s not all. Additional features of the myGMC app include:
- Locate your vehicle: The vehicle location feature shows you on a map where your vehicle is. You can also configure the settings so that the app notifies selected contacts concerning your location.
- Stay up to date on service needs: Access your vehicle’s maintenance schedule so you never miss an appointment, receive service recommendations and alerts, and schedule service appointments through the app.
- Learn about your vehicle: The app provides informational videos related to your specific GMC vehicle, supporting your efforts to become a well-informed vehicle owner.
- Request help: If you’re experiencing operational issues with your GMC vehicle, use the app to get in touch with an OnStar or GMC support representative or roadside assistance.
- Find your way around: The myGMC app has a built-in navigational tool that indicates your location and provides step-by-step directions to your destination. You can even send the app data to your dash screen rather than view the navigational interface on your phone.
Which GMC Models Are Compatible With myGMC?
The myGMC app is compatible with all new GMC models produced in or after 2010. Therefore, if you purchased your vehicle new within the past decade, you’re likely able to enjoy the features that myGMC provides. Keep in mind that older models may only be compatible with older versions of the myGMC app. The most recent versions require a 2015 model year or newer.
How To Use the myGMC App
Once you’ve fully downloaded and installed myGMC on your smartphone, tap on the app icon to launch it. When you use the app for the first time, it prompts you to select your region and country. Make your selection and advance to the next screen. Here, you can choose to create a new myGMC account or sign in to an existing account.
If you’re creating a new account, enter the email address that you provided to the car dealership when you purchased your new GMC vehicle. This email address is the one you can use to access the web-based GMC Owner Center as well.
Once you’re in, you’ll see the myGMC home screen. In the upper left-hand corner is an icon that displays your initials. Tap on that icon to view various account options, including points, connected services, payments, and settings. Explore these options and make changes as desired to configure the app to your preferences.
Back on the home screen, a tab at the top center of the interface displays your vehicle’s name. Tapping on the name opens the Garage, where you can view all the vehicles associated with your myGMC account. Tap on the “Add” option to add vehicles to the Garage and fill out the on-screen fields to complete the addition.
Other home screen options are for common remote commands — “Sound Alarm,” “Stop Alarm,” “Lock,” “Unlock,” and a power button. These allow you to use your smartphone as a key fob. Tap on the “View More” option to access additional remote features, such as “Flash Lights” and “Stop Lights.”
Finally, to access the remaining features of the myGMC app, tap on the app grid icon on the bottom right-hand corner of the interface next to the “Home” tab.
