What Is the Buick Velite?

Are you wondering how the Velite compares to a GMC three-row SUV? The Velite is a two-row SUV that gives you impressive fuel economy, a roomy interior, and agile handling. Are you curious about what makes the Buick Velite stand out from the Chevrolet Bolt EUV? This handy guide will give you the necessary information to understand the dynamic Buick Velite.
History of the Buick Velite
In 2004, Buick unveiled a concept roadster convertible car called the Velite at the New York Auto Show. When the Velite didn’t really catch on at this stage, Buick decided to change direction with the vehicle’s production, which paved the way for unveiling the new all-electric Buick Velite 6 at the 2016 Shanghai Auto Show in China.
In 2019, Buick released the Velite 6 Plus with an electric motor and larger battery, producing 148 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The Chinese market embraced the Velite 6 and Velite 6 Plus as the country enforced stricter emissions control.
Buick and GM’s global team, SAIC-GM, introduced the Velite 6 PHEV in June 2020 in a bid to increase their portfolio of new-energy vehicles for the China market. This progression led the automaker to launch the Buick Velite 7 BEV in July 2020. The current Director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM, Molly Peck, stated the following:
“There has never been such an ambitious rollout of two remarkable electrified products at the same time in Buick’s history in China. It demonstrates our long-term commitment to technology leadership in the electrification segment in our largest market.”
While SAIC-GM continues with its rollout of the Buick Velite, GM continues to make and evolve its United States counterpart, the Chevrolet Bolt EUV. This EUV has an estimated driving range of about 247 miles and comes with innovative technology features in both versions of the Buick Velite.
Let’s look at some of these features that make the Buick Velite 6 and Velite 7 stand out.
Both of these electric SUVs have handsome styling befitting the Buick brand. You’ll notice the contemporary design from the front with slim, wing-shaped headlights bracketing the Velite badging. Sculptured body panels and a raked roof prompt the eye toward the sporty rear of the Buick Velite. Multi Spoke wheels add a mesmerizing appearance to this sophisticated SUV.
Power and Driving Range
The Velite 6 PHEV model has a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and a high-performance 9.5 kWh LG lithium battery pack. This combination gives an output of 181 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque with a 485-mile driving range and an electric-only driving range of 37 miles. The Velite 6 PHEV has three driving modes — normal, sport, and lock — to help with battery consumption and to add regenerative power.
Power for the Velite 7 BEV comes from the Buick eMotion electric system. It comprises a permanent magnet drive motor mated with a high-performance 55.6 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack that delivers 175 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. The Velite 7 has a driving range of up to 311 miles between charges. An electronically controlled variable transmission completes the powertrain for both SUVs.
Both models of the Velite have two rows of seats that can comfortably fit up to five people. Buick designed the interior of the Velite with luxurious features for discerning motorists. You’ll appreciate well-appointed touches such as the black interior with gold trim on the dashboard and front doors. For the ultimate comfort, the driver and front passenger can have heated and ventilated seats. You can enjoy abundant sunshine with the panoramic sunroof and get fresh air with the in-cabin ion air purifying system.
The rear seats of both Velite models fold flat, giving you room to carry large items such as golf clubs. With these flexible seating configurations, the Velite 6 PHEV can get up to 38 cubic feet of cargo space, while the Velite 7 BEV up to 47 cubic feet of cargo space.
Buick has added innovative technology features to the Velite similar to what you would find in the Chevrolet Bolt EUV and other GM vehicles. Buick’s eConnect infotainment system comes with a 10-inch high-resolution touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Baidu CarLife wireless integration. This system also lets you know when the driving range dips to less than 100 kilometers (62 miles) and can help you locate a nearby charging station. You also get technology features such as wireless charging, OnStar 4G connectivity, and Baidu voice assistance.
Driver-Assist and Safety Features
SAIC-GM has equipped the Buick Velite with driver-assist technology commonly found in GM vehicles in the United States. Both the Velite 6 PHEV and the Velite 7 BEV come with a forward-collision alert, a collision mitigation system, and a side blind zone alert. Additional features include automatic parking assist, a lane departure warning, and a full-speed range automatic cruise control system.
