SUV with Captain Seats 2021 | SUVs with Second Row Captain’s Chairs
Full-size SUVs come remarkably well-equipped these days. They have phenomenal in-vehicle technology packages, upscale cabins, and cavernous space. To make use of that space, manufacturers have introduced the second-row captain’s chair during the last decade. The captain’s chair allows passengers in the rear to receive the same cradling comfort as the front passenger and driver do. Thus, calling dibs on the front seat has gone the way of the dodo bird. Yet, what was bad for the bird turned out pretty good for the rest of us.
Let’s take a closer look at some SUVs that feature second-row captain’s chairs.
What Is a Captain’s Seat?
Essentially, a captain’s seat looks the same as a bucket seat. The terms get used interchangeably, but some differences exist. A captain’s seat has armrests and offers an individual, often adjustable, and always more comfortable seat than a bucket or bench design. Installing them in SUVs as a second-row seating option in three-row SUVs has led to widespread popularity for the captain’s seat. Manufacturers have engineered them to slide and tilt with the push of a button to easily access the third row or store for increased cargo capacity.
2021 GMC Acadia
The 2021 Acadia seats up to seven passengers in three rows. The third-row seats two passengers, representing a departure from the usual seating for three people. The middle or second row can come as a bench seat for three or two captain’s seats. You also have the option for a center console with cup holders and storage for the second-row captain’s chair configuration. GMC’s tilt and slide design allow you to access the third row with ease. Even with a forward-facing child seat installed, the second row will tilt and angle to let you climb in.
These seats have most comfortable furnishings found on the front passenger and driver’s seat, including armrests. The SLE trim features premium cloth upholstery. The SLT comes standard with leather-appointed seats. GMC’s Acadia AT4 model can upgrade to black leather with Kalahari trim. The top-of-the-line Denali model comes with premium leather with French stitching.
2021 GMC Yukon
GMC’s 2021 Yukon received a style refresh that upgraded the cabin in several ways. GMC added 66% more cargo capacity and 10 inches of third-row legroom to the new Yukon. You can seat up to eight passengers if you opt for the second-row bench design. Going with the second-row captain’s chairs, you lose a seat, but passengers gain spacious comfort. The bench design does feature a center armrest that folds down from the seatback without a middle passenger present. The captain’s chairs have individual armrests.
Like the Acadia, the Yukon’s SLE version comes with premium cloth seating. The SLT, AT4, and Denali come with upgraded leather upholstery standard. The Denali trim offers four exclusive leather interiors to customize the cabin further, and every trim but the SLE offers heated second-row captain’s seats as an available option.
2021 Buick Enclave
The Enclave seats up to seven people with three in the back, two second-row captain’s chairs, and the front passenger and driver’s seat in the first row. The base model Preferred trim comes with premium cloth seats. The Essence and Premium trim add leather seating standard. The top-of-the-line Avenir model uses four exclusive colors for the leather seats delivering a luxurious look and feel. You have the option for heated second-row captain’s chairs with individual controls.
The second-row captain’s seats use GMC’s Smart Slide technology to get to the third row. These seats will slide forward, tilt, and pitch to the center for greater access, even with a forward-facing child seat installed. All the seats power-fold flat for maximum storage.
2021 Chevrolet Traverse
Chevy’s full-size Traverse SUV has seating for up to eight people in three rows with a second-row bench seat, or seven people when you opt for the second-row captain’s chairs. The L and LS trim come with a second-row bench seat standard. The LT Cloth, LT Leather, RS, Premier, and High Country trim all come standard with the captain’s chairs in the second row.
Leather comes standard on all but the L, LS, and LT Cloth trims. The RS, Premier, and High Country trims offer trim-exclusive leather appointments to elevate their individual style. Second-row captain’s chairs tilt and slide for easy access to the third row. On the Premier and High Country trims, these captain’s chairs feature heated functionality with personal controls.
2021 Chevrolet Tahoe
Newly redesigned, the 2021 Chevy Tahoe offers seating for up to eight people in the second-row bench seat configuration. Opting for second-row captain’s chairs creates additional space. Heated second-row seats come standard on the High Country, and Premier trims and available as an option on the RST and LT models. Second-row passengers have their own controls to dial in the perfect temperature. Leather comes standard on the upper trims and available on the LT and RST.
2021 Chevrolet Suburban
Another newly redesigned model from Chevy, the 2021 Suburban offers the largest cabin in the entire lineup. The new design gives third-row passengers more than 10 inches of additional legroom than previous generations. Opting for second-row captain’s chairs drops the seating capacity from eight to seven.
Like the Tahoe trims, the Suburban High Country and Premier come standard with second-row captain’s chairs with individual heating controls for personalized comfort. Leather appointments vary by trim. These second-row seats also tilt and slide for easy access to the third row. Both the second and third-row seats fold flat to open up over 144 cubic feet of cargo area.
Adding comfort for your passengers can be accomplished in many different ways. Midsize vs. compact SUVs have various features that deliver the comfort you desire from rear-seat entertainment systems to tri-zone climate control to premium leather and soft-touch materials.
