July 13th, 2022 by

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup is one of the company’s most anticipated releases. However, before you splurge on an all-electric pickup, you might be wondering: “Can the Hummer EV pull a trailer?” Fortunately, it can, with an estimated maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.

This is just one of the ways that the Hummer EV Pickup is challenging traditional concepts around electric vehicles. The theatrical truck retains the traditionally aggressive styling and military looks of previous Hummers while adding a bit of futuristic flair that matches its cutting-edge technology. Keep reading to learn more about the unprecedented power that the Hummer EV pickup is bringing to the electric vehicle game.

Traditionally, electric vehicles haven’t been associated with extreme power or performance. EV customers are often trying to reduce their carbon footprint or spend less money on fuel. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup is one of the vehicles challenging this paradigm, packing an unbelievable amount of speed and power for a fully electric truck.

As we mentioned above, the Hummer EV Pickup will have a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. It also has an estimated payload rating of approximately 1,300 pounds. This makes it roughly equivalent to many midsize pickups, although it will fall behind gas- and diesel-powered heavy-duty trucks, which can reach capacities of 20,000 pounds or more. Because the Hummer EV Pickup is not really designed to be an everyday work truck, this towing capability should be ample for Hummer fans.

GMC has a long history of producing very capable towing vehicles, and they have used this experience to create the ProGrade suite of towing technologies. These features have assisted many GMC drivers in the past and will be included as standard in the 2022 Hummer EV Pickup. Some of the features included in the ProGrade package include tire pressure sensors, a trailer light test, maintenance reminders, a pre-departure checklist, hitch guidance with hitch view, trailer camera views, and cargo bed camera views.

Drivers will be able to control these features and view their trailer cameras through the Hummer’s expansive infotainment touch screen. These added perks will make trailering a safer and more enjoyable experience and elevate the Hummer to the towing status of many of the GMCs before it.

Much of the magic behind the new Hummer EV Pickup is tied up in its remarkable powertrain. Although additional trims will become available in the future, the current Hummer EV Pickup model uses a three-motor design that provides all-wheel-drive capability as standard. The vehicle also uses a dedicated all-electric modular chassis designed to power many of GMC’s future electric offerings.

Combined, the Hummer EV’s three motors give the truck a massive 1,000 horsepower. While the torque has been calculated in various ways, it most likely sits between 1,000 and 1,100 lb-ft, which is another enviable achievement. With the Hummer weighing in at over 9,000 pounds, one of its most incredible features is its speed. GMC has included a special feature called the “Watts to Freedom” mode, which allows drivers to harness the power of the vehicle for very quick acceleration. GMC currently estimates that, with this mode engaged, the Hummer can go from zero to 60 mph in approximately 3.0 seconds.

Range is one of the most important considerations when choosing an electric vehicle, and the Hummer EV Pickup delivers a respectable 350 miles in the current Edition 1 model. Beginning in 2023, shorter-range models will become available for a lower price. The Hummer EV Pickup is also equipped for DC fast charging, and, with the right charger, is capable of adding 100 miles in as little as 10 minutes. If fast charging is unavailable, drivers can get approximately 16 miles of driving range per hour of charging with a level 2 charger.

Besides its incredible mechanical performance, the Hummer EV pickup is packed with a range of other features that make it a truly special vehicle. One of the most interesting features is its all-wheel steering. With standard turning in the front and up to 10 degrees of multidirectional movement in the back, the massive Hummer can achieve the turn radius of a much smaller vehicle.

The all-wheel steering feature gives rise to what is undoubtedly the Hummer’s most entertaining and useful feature, Crabwalk. This revolutionary setting allows you to drive the vehicle diagonally using all four wheels. It’s important to note that this is only possible at low speeds but it will add a serious degree of flexibility, especially in off-road situations. Another futuristic feature is Extract Mode, which allows drivers to overcome obstacles by activating the adaptable Air Ride suspension. This can raise the vehicle up to 6 inches and allow it to clear rough terrain.

The Hummer EV is just as stylish as it is rugged. Uniquely, the current Hummer EV model sports an Infinity Roof, which can be completely removed panel by panel and stowed in the spacious front trunk. Drivers can either leave the roof off for a convertible experience or install available transparent panels to turn the entire top of the truck into a panoramic sunroof. The luxury of the interior is further heightened by the large, high-definition digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen and the deluxe Bose audio system.

That’s our overview of the towing capabilities and mechanical performance of the all-new Hummer EV pickup from GMC. As you can see, there’s truly nothing else like it on the market right now.
