Whether you’re interested in a day on the golf course or looking for somewhere beautiful to take a hike, there are plenty of options to choose from in Boardman Township. If you’re ready to get outside and get active, here are our picks for the best outdoor activities in Boardman Township for you to check out today!

Boardman Park

There’s no more classic way to spend time socializing outdoors than taking a visit to the town park, and with Boardman Park, you have a municipal park that can rival any other. The 227-acre property has everything you could ask for, from a Kids Town playground to an outdoor ice skating rink and a large selection of hiking and biking trails.

There are many games available at the park, including courts for tennis, bocce, and volleyball. Spend an afternoon taking part in America’s pastime on the baseball fields, or play a little pickleball. Whatever your sporting preference, Boardman Park has something to offer.

One area where the park stands out from many other local parks is in the full nine-hole disc golf course to play. Bring your favorite disc and some friends and have a great time flinging your Frisbee from the tee box to the target at the end of each hole.

Boardman Sports World

If you love playing sports outside with your family, then Boardman Sports World has plenty to offer. In addition to outdoor batting cages that let you work on your swing while soaking up the sun’s rays, the facility also has an adventure golf course and go-karts, all located outdoors.

For families with young children, Boardman Sports World is a great way to get your kids active and outdoors. It’s particularly popular as a birthday destination. Your child and their friends will love all the fun and games available at Sports World!

Hitchcock Woods

For hikers in search of a more rugged walk through the woods, the hiking trail in Hitchcock Woods provides the perfect solution. Carving through a wooded lot obtained over the last three decades with the help of grants and donations, the 1.4-mile loop is a peaceful way to get outdoors and enjoy nature.

You’ll find plenty of sights to see as you traverse the loop, taking in both the natural plants and trees as well as the many woodland creatures that make their home in the preserve. While the woods may be located amidst a peaceful suburban setting, by the time you’ve headed just a short way down the trail, you’ll forget the outside world exists at all as you get lost in the beauty of nature all around you.

Lake Newport

Created in 1928 by damming Mill Creek, Lake Newport is the largest of the three lakes in Mill Creek Park. It has over 60 acres of open water to boat in. You can bring your own boat and embark it at the provided boat launch or rent a kayak or paddleboat if you don’t have your own but want to spend the day out on the water.

Those less inclined to spending time in a boat can still explore the wetlands thanks to the Albert E. Davies Wetland Trail. This boardwalk allows you to explore the wetlands on foot, taking in the natural sights around you and also learning with the help of informative signs along the length of the trail.

Mill Creek Golf Course

There are few outdoor sports as popular as golf, and a stroll down the fairways is an excellent way to spend an afternoon getting some fresh air and enjoying a sunny day. The good news for golf nuts in Boardman is that you don’t even have to head out of town to play on one of the greatest municipal golf courses in all of America.

The Mill Creek Golf Course is part of the Mill Creek Metro Parks system and features not one but two incredible golf courses. Both courses are par 70 designs by Donald Ross, and each has its own unique appeal and flair. The North course is a winding journey through beautiful wooded holes, while the South course can lay claim to being one of Golfweek’s 30 best municipal golf courses.

A round at Mill Creek Golf Course can be a learning experience too with the help of the talented golf pros at the course, and a stop at the course’s driving range. Pick up anything you need before you tee off at the pro shop, then stop for a tasty meal and some post-round libations at Hole 55!

Mill Creek Preserve

Originally known as Orvets Sod Farm, the Mill Creek Preserve was acquired and protected thanks to grant money from the Ohio Conservation Fund and the Wetlands Resource Restoration Sponsorship Program. Now, as a protected location, the 300-acre preserve provides guests with over 2 miles of hiking trails to enjoy as they take in all the sights the preserve has to offer.

The preserve is home to streams, forests, and fields, all of which have their own unique beauty to offer visitors. There is ample opportunity to go birdwatching or to keep an eye out for the many other types of wildlife that also make their homes inside of the preserve.

As a naturally protected habitat, the preserve also offers unique opportunities throughout the year as the seasons change, which means that just because you think you’ve explored thoroughly today doesn’t mean there won’t be something you’ve never seen before the next time you come to visit.
