GMC continues to evolve and innovate with every year that passes, and it’s little wonder why the automaker’s vehicles are so popular, especially among heavy-duty truck enthusiasts. GMC’s high-quality, well-equipped trucks continue to inspire confidence and impress audiences. If you need a truck with excellent features and great hauling and towing capabilities, the Sierra models are definitely worth researching further.

Before you hit the road with your new truck, it’s useful to know about your vehicle’s capabilities. In this guide, we’ll cover each new Sierra truck’s towing capacity, plus a handful of other features that make each model a great option.

The new Sierra 1500 is a powerful truck with exceptional towing capabilities. It’s an especially great choice for Youngstown drivers in need of a light-duty truck to meet their work needs, whether they’re hauling wood or refrigeration equipment. The towing capacity of the Sierra 1500 ultimately depends on the engine, and each engine contains its own towing and payload capabilities.

This truck’s 2.7-liter turbo-diesel engine delivers 310 horsepower with 348 lbs-ft of torque, and its maximum towing capacity of 9,400 pounds is perfect for hauling lighter loads. The maximum payload capacity of 2,280 pounds is also decent for carrying a lot of extra cargo. You can upgrade to the 5.3-liter V8 engine for slightly bigger hauls, producing 355 horsepower and 383 lbs-ft of torque. Its maximum towing capacity is 11,200 pounds and its payload capacity is 2,180 pounds.

If you want to tow heftier loads, you can select the 3-liter turbo-diesel engine or the 6.2-liter V8 LT1 engines, for a maximum of 13,000 pounds. The 3-liter diesel engine has a payload capacity of 1,830 pounds, while the V8 has a capacity of 5,420.

You also have the option to enhance the Sierra 1500’s towing capacity with a wide variety of available packages and features, many of which weren’t available in previous years. The max trailering package enables your Sierra to reach the maximum 13,000-towing capacity and includes various features, like an automatic locking rear differential, an enhanced cooling radiator, and an integrated trailer brake controller.

With the trailering camera package, you can add two side-view mirrors to your Sierra 1500to have an easier time reversing, changing lanes, and parking when you have a trailer attached to the vehicle. With the traction select system, you can also choose the tow or haul mode to enhance your performance. The Sierra 1500 enables you to tow large flatbed trailers, small horse trailers, sailboats, pop-up campers, car trailers, and much more.

Sierra HD

The Sierra HD is a heavy-duty, powerful truck built for hauling heavy loads and contains plenty of exciting options, whether you simply need a good truck for your job site or something to deliver heavier construction materials. The Sierra HD Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali trims all come equipped with a standard 6.6-liter V8 gas engine. On the SLE and higher trims, there’s the option to upgrade to a 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 engine that produces 445 horsepower with 910 lbs-ft of torque for optimal performance.

The Pro, SLE, and SLT all have a highly impressive towing capacity of 36,000 and a payload capacity of 7,442, while the Sierra HD AT4 has a slightly lower capacity of 21,130 and a payload capacity of 4,168. The Denali has a capacity of 30,990 pounds and a payload capacity of 6,374, making it a suitable medium between the AT4 and the Pro, SLE, and SLT trims.

The Sierra HD truck’s large drive shift and rear axle can also give you additional strength and control while hauling large loads. GMC made very few changes to the HD this year beyond slight improvements to the brakes and steering system. The AT4 trim is especially useful for off-road hauling, with an off-road suspension and a locking rear differential coming standard, while the other trims are useful for lugging larger trailers and equipment on busier highways.

Sierra 2500 HD

The Sierra 2500 HD is a useful option for towing both long and short distances and offers plenty of additional flexibility. It has a maximum towing capacity of 18,500 pounds, but the specific capacity varies based on your engine of choice. If you choose the standard  6.6-liter V8 gas engine, you can expect 401 horsepower with 464 lbs-ft of torque and a maximum GCWR of 24,000 pounds. The maximum towing capacity for a conventional hitch is 14,500 pounds, while the fifth-wheel hitch and gooseneck hitch sits at 16,620 pounds. The maximum payload is a nice 3,862 pounds.

The diesel engine features slightly heavier capabilities, with a maximum GCWR of 27,500 pounds. Convention, fifth-wheel, and gooseneck hitches all have a towing capacity of 18,500 pounds. The maximum payload is 3,597 pounds, perfect for moving larger appliances. GMC increased the truck’s towing capabilities up from 14,500 in the 2021 model, but otherwise made only minor changes to the Sierra 2500 HD.

Sierra 3500 HD Chassis Cab

With stout towing and hauling capabilities, the Sierra 3500 HD Chassis Cab makes a great work truck. It comes standard with a gas engine producing 401 horsepower and 464 lbs-ft of torque, though a diesel engine is also available. GMC made no significant changes in 2022, and the 3500’s maximum towing capacity sits at 14,500 pounds. The Crew Cab trim has a maximum available payload of 7,040 pounds, while the Regular Cab option has a slightly higher payload of 7,571 pounds. Both options have a maximum GCWR of 40,000 pounds.

For more advanced towing, the diesel engine may be the way to go, though both have their advantages. The Sierra 1500 HD Chassis Cab continues to level up as the years go by, offering features designed to make hauling and parking easier, like dual alternators, an electric parking brake, and more.
